Dean Marshall Consultancy strongly believe that site owners using Joomla 1.5 should upgrade, as soon as components and/or modules used in your site are available on the Joomla 1.7 platform. If you are using VirtueMart for example find out if there is a version compatible with 1.7.
Maybe it's time for a change and you want new components to power your site, every day new add-ons are available that offer new and exiting options. If what you currently use does not work for you this is an ideal time to put things right.
If your site holds peoples personal information or has a shopping cart, the likelihood of hacker activity will increase on the Joomla 1.5 platform from now on.
If you are looking for a new design or layout you really need to have this built on the Joomla 1.7 platform as upgrading from now on is simple and free.
At the moment not many web developers have gone through the process of upgrading a clients site from 1.5 to Joomla 1.7, the migration process from 1.0 to 1.5 was very difficult, DMC picked up clients from other developers who could not do the job they had been paid for.
Dean Marshall Consultancy have run the upgrade process over this site to learn the ins and outs of what is involved ( we don't use a 1.7 version for template reasons ), there are several components out there that help with the upgrade, but each of them has their own faults. The first time we attempted an upgrade it took seven tries, since then we've upgraded clients sites and some of our other sites at the first attempt.
We've also taken a Joomla 1.5 site and copied out all the content, menu items and Joomla users, then imported them into a clean Joomla 1.7 site, this is the best way forward from 1.5 if you no longer need old components or the components you had, no longer exist.
If you are looking to upgrade your site and money is a key factor ask yourself:
- Is there content that we no longer need?
- Are there components, modules, etc, installed in the site that are not used or used scarcely that can be removed?
- Do we really need to keep our current template ( design / layout )?
If money is a factor then the smaller the amount of content the better and if you can do as much of the work yourself you will bring down the cost of upgrading greatly.
Cost of upgrading to Joomla 1.7
Putting a price on upgrading from 1.5 to Joomla 1.7 is very difficult and depends on components ( add-ons ) installed in your site.
Excluding template work an upgrade/migration with no major components would cost in the region of £1000 - £1250 depending on the number of pages and size of the menu structure, but remember this still needs further work as modules will probably need reworking. The reworking and/or updating of modules can be done by any novice Joomla user, the difficulty is in getting the old versions into the Joomla 1.7 site.
