Electronics : Belkin USB 7-Port Economy HubRating: - Does the jobThis hub is just what i needed. I've got a laptop with a single 1.1 USB port. Which sucks because every time i wanted to use any peripheral device (printer, scanner, floppy disk etc) i had to unplug my mouse and use the rubbish touch mouse on the laptop. This situation was very annoying. Yet most other hubs require a 2.0 USB port in your computer, which i did not have. This is the only hub i could find which had more than 4 ports and which would run through my single 1.1 port. The hub came a day before it was scheduled to, which was nice and has one beast of a power adaptor. It really needs to be plugged in to the wall as it can overload otherwise. The only problem which i can think of is that it is not a 2.0 hub and therefore will not run 2.0 USB devices very well (a bit slower). Although this is the same for any 1.1 USB port no matter if its in a hub or a P.C. The hub itself is very easy to install, just plug it in with all your devices attached and then wait for windows (XP) to recognise all of them. Overall, very good and very useful. Rating: - Seems fine so farMy PC has 4 USB 2.0 ports (inconveniently sited at the back), but I now have at least 8 USB peripherals, so a 7 port hub is ideal. The Belkin 7-port hub is supplied with a large, heavy power supply and an AB cable to connect the hub to the PC. Getting it out of the blister pack is the hard part. After that, everything else is a doddle. Power it up, plug it in and it just works. I haven't plugged my CanoScan LIDE scanner into it, because previous experience has shown that the CanoScan takes a lot of current and seems prone to upsetting USB ports. Apart from that, everything else I've tried works normally. With none of the loads taking a lot of power, the hub doesn't get too hot. I'm not completely sure what the port status lights are for, because - regardless of what is connected - they are all on, except when the computer is booting when they are all off. Presumably a port status light would go out if there were an overload on that port. It would be nice if it did USB 2.0, and if it had a switch-mode PSU, and if the lights flickered in an interesting way, but then it would cost more, and that wouldn't be so nice. A good product at a very fair price. Rating: - Belkin 7 port USB HubThis is a nice looking hub at a good price. It will work fine for devices like keyboards, mice, scanners, modems, and other low power USB devices. It does not work so well with higher power devices like hard drives and Apple Speakers when drawing power through the hub. It does get quite warm when it's been on all day - I wouldn't reccomend leaving it on constantly as I can quite believe it overheating as other reviewers have suggested. For the price, it's good alue for money though. Rating: - OverheatingEven though I didn't buy this product from this site I must point out that I bought about 5 of these and they all overheated. The solution to this is to plug it into a mains socket not an extension, this solved the problem. Rating: - Belkin USB HubGreat product. I only have 2 USB ports on my laptop. However, I have a broadband modem, a USB mouse, a scanner, printer and a USB commection kit for my Nokia phone. Obviously, this Hub was the answer to my problem. Literally is just plug in and play. I'm running windows XP, and I just plugged the hub into my computer, and plugged all my devices into the hub. I had no drivers or anything to install which was great. I've only had it for a few days now but it seems to be working great. From what I understand though, it is not USB 2.0 compatible so will now work with external harddrives etc. However, if i was to ever get one of these I could just plug it straight into my other spare port on thr back of my laptop. Also something worth noting is that it's apparently not very good with devices that draw power from USB (some scanners etc that don't have a power supply and obtain power from the computer). having said that, my optical mouse has a light that uses power and it has no problems with that. All in all, a fool proof product that certainly tidies up my desktop and saves me from having to constantly plug and unplug other devices. Another plus is that they can be linked to other USB hubs to create a daisy chain of even more free ports. 4 stars from me. Only loses a star because it can't handle USB 2.0. The lights in the front looks cool aswell. |
