Boogie Nights [DVD] [1998]Rating: - Terrible DVD edition of a great filmI would have to reiterate what someone has already said. I have just watched the DVD and the way the film is cropped has ruined the cinematography. There is a scene early in the film where Jack Horner is talking to Dirk Diggler in a living room, each sitting on a different chair/sofa on opposite sides of the room. All you see are their feet/legs, so you are essentially watching an empty room having a conversation. It's absurd. And sadly, due to the format of the film, the whole film leaves you feeling as if you are missing or being cheating of something - and that's because you are! If you love this film, don't buy this, because it's not at all fun to watch. Rating: - Boogie Nights - Tongue in Cheek'Boogie Nights' presents not only an incredibly impressive cast (I'm sure we wouldn't have seen most of them in this if it had been made 6 years later) but a sound script and tight dialogue. It's an interesting insight into how the porn industry used to be, but it's certainly starting to show its age. A good watch. Rating: - severely indebted to GoodfellasAnderson's first movie is fun but its over long at 3 hours. It rips off the Scorsese/ Goodfellas winning combination of great music and plenty of long tracking shots with a voice over. Try something like that at College or University and you'll get done for plagiarism. 6/10. Rating: - The definative review about Boogie NightsSince enough comments have been made about this horrifical, mastered version of an excellent film, let me share with you what you need to do to get your hands on an A+++ quality edition, as my recent epic journey has finally come to an end. For the last 2 years I have tried to find a properly mastered PAL version of this movie and no matter what I tried, I either found the same dubious DVR copy which Amazon UK is selling or it was the NTSC version from the U.S. England, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxemburg => Zero Luck. But if you are a REAL movie buff, you will not give up. So when I was in Oslo, Norway the other day, I figured 'What the hell; let's have a look' and went into an electronics store. Guess what: I found the PAL version DVD (with the U.S. NTSC artwork), bought it, took it home..... VICTORY AT LAST!!! English audio, English subtitles, Dolby 2.0, excellent video resolution. So if you guys are anywhere near Norway or can find a Norwegian mail-order service somewhere, do yourself a favor and stop the misery - Go buy this version and enjoy this hell of a Hollywood jam. -The Scorpion Hunter Rating: - oh dear!I can't understand why this is such a highly rated film!! There is nothing good about it except mindless violence, drug taking and stupid sexual innuendos. Fair enough this film is based on the porn industry so I would be a bit confused if there was no sex in it whatsoever but it's just the way it's shot and acted that seems so tacky. I apologize to people who have put this at the top of their hundred greatest films list but I really disliked it! |
