Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: Leave it to the wildly inventive Coen brothers (Joel directs, Ethan produces, they both write) to concoct a fiendishly clever kidnap caper that's simultaneously a comedy of errors, a Midwestern satire, a taut suspense thriller and a violent tale of criminal misfortune. It all begins when a hapless car salesman (played to perfection by William H. Macy) ineptly orchestrates the kidnapping of his own wife. The plan goes horribly awry in the hands of bumbling bad guys Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare (one of them being described by a local girl as "kinda funny lookin'" and "not circumcised"), and the pregnant sheriff of Brainerd, Minnesota, (played exquisitely by Frances McDormand in an Oscar-winning role) is suddenly faced with a case of multiple murders. Her investigation is laced with offbeat observations about life in the rural hinterland of Minnesota and North Dakota, and Fargo embraces its local yokels with affectionate humour. At times shocking and hilarious, Fargo is utterly unique and distinctly American, bearing the unmistakable stamp of its inspired creators. --Jeff Shannon, Amazon.com Amazon.co.uk Review: Leave it to the wildly inventive Coen brothers to concoct a fiendishly clever kidnap caper with Fargo that's simultaneously a comedy of errors, a Midwestern satire, a taut suspense thriller and a violent tale of criminal misfortune. Extras include a rare 20-minute interview with the Coens and Frances McDormand, dating from the time of the movie's release, and the 27-minute retrospective documentary, "Minnesota Nice", which has more interviews with the principal cast and crew. There's a "Coen Brothers' Family Tree" listing actors who have collaborated with the duo, and an on-screen trivia track which, among other nuggets, provides a history of pancakes after Peter Stormare's character famously demands "Where is pancakes house?". Cinematographer Roger Deakins provides an intermittent commentary mostly concerned with technical issues. The text of an American Cinematographer article about Deakins and the Coens, trailers and a behind-the-scenes photo gallery complete the package. --Mark Walker Average Rating:
![]() Rating: - Crime in a Very Cold PlaceBased on a True Story there is really a place called Fargo on the borders of North Dakota where because of extremes of cold in winter it takes a tough person to survive. The story concerns Murder, Slimy Characters and good Police work by a woman Sheriff to solve the case so with all these involved in this factual story I can recommend it for excellent viewing. Rating: - McDormand Mc MagicI watched this film on TV and before it had finished, guess what, I was onto Amazon web site and before the film had finished I had ordered the DVD. I must admit I am A McDormand Junkie and anything she is in I will buy because she has a certain air about her that makes her compulsive viewing. Don't ask me what it is because if I new I would market it and become an overnight SQUILLIONARE. Buy it, watch it, watch it again and again and just enjoy the magic that is Francis McDormand. Rating: - thin iceThe Coen brothers basically make films about "pacts with the Devil" that go tragicomically wrong (as pacts with the Devil always will, and rightly so, by definition). They are like modern equivalents of Greek tragedy. The problem is they also teeter on the edge of being trite moral lessons. McDormand's benign policewoman is beautifully written and played, but I'm uncomfortable with her as a representative of the police force in general, and also there's something wrong with the romantic lie of her ... Read More Rating: - quirky dramaA gloriously quirky dark drama. Masterful acting by Francis McDormand. Compelling and Entertaining Rating: - I have never understood the love for this film.I watched it when it came out because of the rave reviews, and I struggled to sit through it. The direction is bland the acting adequate and the story really lacked any excitment or tension. I tried to watch it again tonight to no avail it is still a poor movie.
