Music : My Fair Lady - Original Soundtrackfrom: Sony Classical
Disc 1:
Editorial Review: Amazon.co.uk Review: Lerner and Loewe's elegant, indestructible musical is one of those rare Broadway triumphs to be transferred to the big screen with practically every note and lyric intact. Warner's plush film version also preserved for posterity the definitive performances of Rex Harrison as Professor Higgins (though Jack Warner originally wanted Cary Grant) and Stanley Holloway as Alfred Dolittle. But if the decision to replace Broadway's radiant Julie Andrews (then a stranger to Hollywood) with the more bankable Audrey Hepburn remains a tad controversial, there is little doubt that Miss Hepburn made a captivatingly chic Eliza Dolittle; albeit with a singing voice provided by game dubber-for-the-stars, Marni Nixon. My Fair Lady was lovingly restored to its full Technicolored, widescreen glory in 1994, and from the spectacularly revitalised soundtrack comes this sumptuous rival to its legendary Broadway counterpart. Greatly expanded to present every beautifully constructed number in its entirety, as well as previously unreleased nuggets from André Previn's luminous, Oscar-winning underscore, the earlier CD of the 1964 soundtrack album now sounds distinctly moth-eaten. MY FAIR LADY holds up well and you don't get this sense. The entire ablum is a gem and there's not a sour note in it. Rating: - A Good Album Spoilt - Just a little.Being a Luddite, I have the original vinyl edition of this album. which sounds better than this CD, My LP has a warm fugginess about it that suggests snoozy, boozy Christmasses by the fire - The CD doesn't! I had to buy it though because I need to use some of the music (a wedding funnily enough!) and they only have a new fangled plain CD Player where it's all happening! Call me a cynic as well, but I know don't why they've put the additional tracks on here? They are pointless bits of editing ... Rating: - Harrison, Hepburn and Happiness. For as long as I can remember this has been the one musical soundtrack that has haunted me. I have always known at least a few phrases from each song - but now I can successfully complete each and every one. Much to my cat's amusement I can now waltz around the living room accompanied to 'I could have danced all night'. The musical arrangements are still fresh and Marnie Nixon's voice is outstanding. Why has it taken me so long to buy this CD? I've no idea, but now in the words of ... Read More Browse for similar items by category:
