APF Bridge Demo And Development Site

Installation Instructions

Don't forget - This component is almost ready for use on a live site.
I am fairly confident that it works - I am currently developing a site that uses it - but the choice, and ultimately the risk and responsibility is yours.

Obtain Joomla
Obtain Amazon Products Feed (APF) from http://www.mrrat.com/aws/
Install Joomla http://www.joomla.org/

Install Amazon Products Feed:

=============================
Unzip all of the files and folders  from the APF distribution
FTP ALL (except /docs/ ) to your webspace - I suggest /store/ under your Joomla instal folder.
You may rename amazon_products_feed.cgi to anything you like.
You may change the file suffix to .pl if you prefer.
CHMOD the two .cgi files to 755 (775 if necessary).
    Call apf_config.cgi in your browser.
Create (enter) an admin password - remember this password.
Enter your Amazon Associates IDs, one for each locale (country).
WARNING: You cannot use one associate ID for ALL locales. You must register at each Amazon site.
Select your default locale - the country used if none is specified.
Examine the options within the config screen.
When you are ready - re-enter you password at the bottom of the page, and click to save settings.
Browse your store by entering its URL in your browser - make a note of this URL.
    example:  http://www.<yourdomain>.com/store/amazon_products_feed.cgi

Install and configure the apf_bridge component:

Enter your backend /administrator/ section of your site.
From the admin menu: Select  Components --> Install
Click the browse button and point to the com_apf_bridge.zip file you downloaded earlier.
Now click the button marked 'Upload file and install'.
Hopefully you will see a success message. Click the 'Continue' Link at the bottom of the screen.
Now, on the 'Components' menu go to 'APF by MrRat'
Now, on the admin menu go to Menu-->Main Menu - click 'New' --> 'Component' and in the list select APF by MrRat.
Give the Menu entry a name 'Our Store' for example.  Click Save.
Enter the url of your store
        eg: http://www.<your-domain>.com/store/amazon_products_feed.cgi
Enter the url of your store relative to the 'web_root' or 'public_html' folder - with initial slash
        eg: /store/amazon_products_feed.cgi
Leave the Debug level disabled, unless you experience problems.

Test, Test and Test some more:

Browse around your APF Bridge generated store.
If you are using the shopping cart:
Ensure that multiple items can be added to the cart.
Try altering the quantities of items in the cart, removing items, etc.
Click the 'Buy from Amazon' button to proceed to checkout.

If you are using Buy Buttons or product links then click through to Amazon a few times.
Ensure that you see the results at Amazon that you expected.
In either eventuality - you should log in to 'Associates central' the next day and ensure that your clicks registered.
check the link type report and look for 'REST' queries or 'Shopping Cart' clicks.

Additions that you may be interested in:

Plugin (Mambot) to allow you to display products within your content items, which then link to your store, or directly to Amazon
Search Module - place a search box on every page on your joomla site.
APF Mod Files - extend the capabilities of the APF script itself with these mod files

        FREE

See-more.mod        - Extend the number of links to subsequent pages beyond 10 at the bottom of pages.

        FOR A FEE

Breadcrumb.mod        - Allows proper multilevel breadcrumbs instead of the default two level maximum.

FOR A FEE - But will probably work best with an additional Joomla module (leave it with me for a while)

Logging.mod        - records all products viewed, builds todays, yesterdays, last7days most viewed products.
Mini-shopping-cart.mod    - (actually I may need to make a Joomla module for this, let me think about it).

Order Form - A New Component From The Same Developer

I am currently working on a new component I call 'Order Form', a vastly simplified e-commerce component with few of the complexities of 'shopping cart' software.  The idea as that a retailer with under 30 products pre-sells or markets these products through their website before passing the shopper on to their electronic order form. The shopper enters their item quantities, then their personal details. Next they select their payment method, cheque, credit card or paypal. In any event the order is notified to the website owner. The shopper then either posts a cheque with a printed copy of their order, or is passed to paypal for credit card or 'paypal' payment.

Additionally, the component will handle two important functions - perhaps not at the time of initial release:
1. The shopper on completion of their paypal/credit card payment can be passed on to a thank you page - the component will handle this function and will be able to 'mirror' back a confirmation of the details of the order - as passed back by paypal.

2. Paypal's servers can 'POST' data back to a web site as instant confirmation that payment has been made and has been received. The component will store this data and carry out further validation - for example ensuring that the price paid for each item correctly reflects the current price of the product - ensuring no tampering has taken place.

Anticipated price for this component will be somewhere between £20 and £50 - depends how complex it gets

Watch this space.
