One of Ridley Scott's most wrong-headed films, this one (like all of his movies) looks fabulous and sounds utterly ridiculous, almost from the beginning. His first mistake was casting the wonderful Gerard Dépardieu as Columbus and forcing him to speak English, which Dépardieu does with decided difficulty. After spending far too much time on the ocean with Columbus' three ships (you wish they would sail over the edge of the world), they arrive in the West Indies, only to turn around and sail back. The rest of the film deals with the not particularly comprehensible politics of Columbus' venture, which leads to the violent slaughter of trusting natives by a band of cardboard villains. Dépardieu, who radiates sympathy, looks as if he's at sea with this material. --Marshall Fine, Amazon.com




Rating: - Outstanding
When compared to the fiasco that was Kingdom Of Heaven. 1492 serves as a reminder of what a trully great film director Ridley Scott is. The casting of Gerard Depardieu is inspired and its impossible to imagine anyone else playing this passionate visionary. As with all Scott films it is visually stunning and reuniting with Bladerunner composer Vangelis, the score sets the mood of the film perfectly.

A visually stunning drama,and performance, accounting the story of Columbus and, his conquest, to find the new world. I found this film to be both, exciting, and from a historical view, fascinating, giving a great insight to what life was like back then.
What really makes this film special, is the stunning acting of, Depardieu. He really brings the character of Columbus to life, with so much drive and passion, to follow his dreams despite, ridicule and uninterest of his plan from others.

Rating: - A dramatisation of a key moment in history
The vision and courage of Christopher Columbus helped to shape the world in which we live today. This film attempts to capture the political background, the great 10-week voyage at sea, and then the subsequent birth pangs of Spain's 'New World' in the Americas.

The perils of working towards an anniversary and trying to beat a rival project to the screen are all too evident in 1492 - Conquest of Paradise. It's easily Ridley Scott's most beautiful looking film, designed and shot with real love and care.
