This 1943 version of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre was made just two years after Citizen Kane, and it certainly looks like star Orson Welles muscled his way behind the camera much of the time. (In fact, co-star Joan Fontaine--who plays the title character--has maintained that Welles methodically did just that every day on the set.) Not that the film's official director was a hack: Robert Stevenson gets the credit, a man who later had a busy career at Disney making numerous live-action hits such as Mary Poppins. But there's no mistaking Welles' masterful hand in this film's bold and creative look, and there's no getting away from his enigmatic charisma as Rochester, the widower who takes in Jane as a governess to his daughter. An engrossing, gorgeous film, there's even a small role for Elizabeth Taylor at the beginning as Jane's unlucky, doomed friend at a cruel boarding school. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com




Rating: - Better than I thought
This is another gem from 1944 that my girlfriend and I have discovered. I've never read the book as I find reading boring. However, I can tell why this author has got famous. Its a good story that is very well acted by the whole of the cast, including the young Jane Eyre at the beginning of the film, alongside a young Elizabeth Taylor. I was induced to read Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre," a beloved literary classic, at the relatively early age of eleven - all because I saw this movie. Rating: - Entertaining adaptation of Charlotte Bronte classic
Photographed in black and white with a gothic feel to it, this film has all the passion and atmosphere of Charlotte Bronte's original story. Orson Welles plays Mr Rochester with his usual gusto. Peggy Ann Garner gives a memorable performance in the first part of the film as the young Jane struggling through her early years in a harsh orphanage. Elizabeth Taylor has a small but significant role as Jane's doomed friend. Joan Fontaine is a natural choice to play the solid,demure and dependable Jane Eyre.
